Training Options
There are several options for those who want to pursue a career as a certified crane operator.
The first step is to register with the BCACS. After registration, you’ll receive Login information that will provide access to your personal, secure, online Logbook. You will use the online program to guide you and track your progress as you gain crane operating experience. Regardless of the training method or direction that you choose, the online Logbook will become an essential tool for all operators.
Now that you have registered and set up your online Logbook, there are different options depending on your current level of experience:
- If you have experience, you can proceed with the assessment process for your particular crane type.
- If you are a new operator or feel you need further training to prepare for the assessment, you and/or your employer may choose to do in-house training. You may also arrange upgrading with a training provider of your choice.
- Apprenticeship – you may choose to submit an application to the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and register as an apprentice for the applicable crane type. Three training providers have been selected and approved to offer training funded by the ITA. They are: the College of New Caledonia, Eagle West Crane Academy and the IUOE Local 115 Training Association. This direction provides you with the opportunity to have access to ITA-funded training. Tuition will be charged by the training provider; however, the ITA funding subsidizes your training which reduces the cost to both you and your employer.
