Operator Certification

Each of the CraneSafe Certificates is matched to an Apprenticeship Qualification in BC. Sometimes you will hear the term “ticket” used instead of qualification or credential. Although there are different terms used, what’s important is that you obtain the appropriate credential for the crane type that you will be operating.

There are different pathways to become certified as a crane operator in British Columbia.

Apprenticeship

If you are new to the industry, you can sign up as an apprentice and learn the trade while working under the mentorship of skilled operators. The first step, if you intend to take this route, is to complete the Industry Training Authority (ITA) Apprentice and Sponsor Registration Form, which outlines the rights and responsibilities of both the apprentice and the sponsor (employer). After registering, you and your employer will have access to an online logbook where you will detail your progress and the employer will sign off to confirm your accomplishments.

Challenging the Qualification

Some operators may choose to challenge the exam. They may do that if they are experienced operators and feel they have the skills to justify being awarded the qualification.

If you wish to challenge a crane qualification, go to the ITA website and download the Challenge Application form for your specific equipment type. You can find the forms for Boom Trucks, Mobile Cranes and Tower Cranes on the Program Listings page. In addition to the ITA written exam, you will also need to pass a practical assessment. BC Equivalency Certificate

For those operators who have recognized government certification from another Canadian jurisdiction, there is the option of a BC Equivalency Certificate. Click here for more information.
